Repeating Infrasound From an Earthquake Doublet in Alaska

نویسندگان

چکیده

Earthquake infrasound contains information concerning the underground media and earthquake source. We identify three types of repeating infrasound: local, secondary, epicentral from two successive Mw6.2 earthquakes (separated by <2 h <10 km) in Alaska. The path effects are same for sets infrasound, letting us focus on coupling mechanism. calculate relative power spectral density change between events using acoustic seismic records array I53 individual USArray stations. In 0.9–2.1 Hz band, we find that energy is converted efficiently into energy. addition, similar spatial distributions diffracted infrasonic energies, which indicate influence different focal mechanisms observations. This study sheds light generation mechanism demonstrates potential monitoring to constrain source properties.

Diverse rupture processes in the 2015 Peru deep earthquake doublet

Earthquakes in deeply subducted oceanic lithosphere can involve either brittle or dissipative ruptures. On 24 November 2015, two deep (606 and 622 km) magnitude 7.5 and 7.6 earthquakes occurred 316 s and 55 km apart. The first event (E1) was a brittle rupture with a sequence of comparable-size subevents extending unilaterally ~50 km southward with a rupture speed of ~4.5 km/s. This earthquake t...

Limitations of rupture forecasting exposed by instantaneously triggered earthquake doublet

Earthquake hazard assessments and rupture forecasts are based on the potential length of seismic rupture and whether or not slip is arrested at fault segment boundaries. Such forecasts do not generally consider that one earthquake can trigger a second large event, near-instantaneously, at distances greater than a few kilometres. Here we present a geodetic and seismological analysis of a magnitu...

Insights on earthquake triggering processes from early aftershocks of repeating microearthquakes

Characterizing the evolution of seismicity rate of early aftershocks can yield important information about earthquake nucleation and triggering. However, this task is challenging because early aftershock seismic signals are obscured by those of the mainshock. Previous studies of early aftershocks employed high-pass filtering and template matching but had limited performance and completeness at ...

Infrasound Emission from Wind Turbines

A critical survey of all known published measurement results of infrasound from wind turbines has been made. The survey indicates that wind turbines of contemporary design with an upwind rotor generate very faint infrasound with a level far below the threshold of perception even at a rather short distance. From considerations on propagation and transmission of infrasound it is concluded that in...
